About Lori
Lori J. Dow’s sultry, lucid voice lifts listeners, delivering energy, lightness and rhythm. Her music elevates feeling—lets you remember, feel, hope for what’s ahead and live powerfully in the moment.
In 2005, when Lori Dow’s debut CD Unconditionally Yours, was released, it served as an introduction for many to Lori’s incredible vocal abilities. While Lori played extensively throughout New England and had a fan base prior to her debut release, Unconditionally Yours was, for most, their first taste of Lori’s abilities with original material. Of the ten tracks on the set, only two were covers – Teena Marie’s Dear Lover, and another by Yolanda Adams. The thoughtful vocal arrangements and effortless delivery, backed by live instrum entation and solid production, blended perfectly to produce a project worthy of the 2006 Urban Music Award it received. In truth, the disc perfectly represented all that is Lori: smooth and soulful; beautiful & classy; mature and elegant, yet warm, friendly and familiar.
Now, as she works diligently on her sophomore project, Lori is poised to not just solidify her fan base and position she established with Unconditionally Yours but to expand upon both. “This time around, the sound is a little different”, says Lori. “The foundation of live instrumentation is still there, as well as material that matters, but I’ve grown and so has my music.”
Not many artists still incorporate live instrumentation in their recordings but for Lori, the live instrumentation on her recordings is a holdover from the fact that she is a live performer first, and a recording artist second – a clear break from the recent trend of studio artists currently dominating the industry. Her live performances are like an amusement ride; filled with audience interaction, frequent impromptu set changes and a playful banter that keeps the audience fully engaged. Lori is more comfortable on stage than most people are in their favorite pair of jeans.
Her energy and presence have been known to immediately brighten a room both on and off stage. Her infectious smile, affable nature and warm personality make you feel as though you’ve known her for years and instantly make you a fan – even before you ever hear her sing. And once she does, you’re hooked. “There’s nothing like the joy of performing for me. I started doing it when I was a little girl and I haven’t sat down since” She says, with a laugh as melodic as her singing.
At 9, Lori’s talents were first revealed, and true to her words, she has yet to sit still, or stop doing what she does so well. She has opened for a number of artists such as Jean Carne, Andre Ward and Regina Belle, to name a few. She takes her inspiration first from God, then from her Mom and Aunt, and is musically influenced by women that can best be described as “pure” vocalists – a group that includes Yolanda Adams, Teena Marie, CeCe Winans, Chaka Khan and Whitney Houston to name a few. Her style is clearly reflective of these influences in that it is a mixture of gospel, jazz and soul in a way that is reminiscent of a time gone but clearly not forgotten, when most R&B music was reflective of that mixture.
If you value real vocal abilities and if you are interested in music that speaks of love lost and love found, songs that reveal a solid spiritual foundation, or songs that make you feel good and leave you reminiscing on days gone by, then you have come to the right place.
